Imagine a society with no art, no literature, no
statues, no paintings, no great works of any kind.
Imagine the impact on the quality of life for the
rest of us. Although such a society sounds
far-fetched, it is only through the work of
dedicated individuals and the contributions of many
others that artistic achievement is nurtured and
developed. Without such dedication and contribution,
the cultureless society becomes a reality. The New
Playwrights Foundation (NPF) is a 37 years old
organization that supports the arts
through free seminars and conferences and, most
significantly, by assisting talented emerging
writers in producing their plays and motion
pictures. Through its many programs and productions,
the foundation has successfully launched the careers
of many young writers. When New Playwrights
Foundation began its work, the government strongly
recognized the important role artists play in
raising the quality of life for all of us.
Government funding was readily available for serious
talented artists who might not otherwise have a
chance to develop. Especially in light of cutbacks
in government funding for the arts in recent years,
there’s an urgent need these days for private sector
support to maintain the quality of artistic
achievement our country has generated for
generations.
Under the strain of declining public resources, many
organizations like New Playwrights Foundation have
simply vanished. Fortunately, through the ample
generosity of the private sector and the tenacity of
its dedicated artist members, the New Playwrights
Foundation has continued its grassroots programs and
support for the arts without interruption for over
nearly forty years.

Productions to continue and make its very special
movies. One of the most interesting and original
challenges that we’re determined to bring to life is
our LITERATURE TO PEOPLE
PROJECT, beginning with
the completion of the first phase of "Dostoevsky-LA".
"Dostoevsky-LA"
is committed to cinematic
adaptations of three masterpieces by
Fyodor Dostoevsky,
a writer whose psychological penetration into the
deepest recesses of the human heart had a profound
influence on 20th century culture. In transporting
the essential elements of Dostoevsky's works from
19th century Russia to modern-day Los Angeles, we
aim to underscore the universality of the great
writer’s tales as well as commonalities of the human
experience—its values and issues.
The first
film of this project - the feature
"Shades of Day",
is already completed. It’s based on the short novel
White Nights,
one of the greatest love stories ever written, is
already completed.
The second film
"Notes From The New World"
based on one of the most profound and prophetic
works of the world literature "Notes From The
Underground"
is in the advanced stage of pre-production.
The two accompanying films in the trilogy
"Crime
and Punishment,LA"
and
"Idiot,LA"
are currently in development. Once completed, the
Project and accompanying educational materials will
constitute a bona fide cultural event and catalyst
for artistic truth by presenting a classic author to
an entirely new generation in a fresh and exciting
form.
